By definition, a diluent is an agent added to a substance to help liquid flow faster than normal rate by making it thinner. Petroleum pipelines need diluents to easily transport crude oil across the length of the pipeline from rig to refinery. Without them, pipeline pumps have to exert force just to make the thick crude oil move (even if lighter hydrocarbons in the oil are also diluents themselves). Continue reading
